Humorous Overkill is a first-person shooter that I designed and produced in collaboration with a team of artists, programmers and a fellow designer as part of my studies at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment.
Our team’s brief contained only one thing – we had to create a first-person shooter. The rest was up to us. I pitched the idea of doing something unexpected and making everything a pink, cupcake-filled childhood fantasy game and as a team, we brainstormed to create the final concept.
Working with Marcus, our other designer, we created the first iteration of our game design document (which can be found here) and drafted up level designs in a way that naturally integrated mechanics as they were introduced.
As producer, I created a Trello board to track team tasks and monitor progress to ensure we met our 13 week deadline. We also established a group Discord to further flesh out ideas and refine mechanics. I made sure there was positive communication between team members and helped resolve conflicts to ensure we continued to work as a team to achieve our goals.
I created the narrative, as well as wrote and performed the voice-overs which were used in the final game.
Our game was far from perfect; but our post-mortem gave us further insight into what areas would have helped us succeed such as increased user testing and earlier concept work on enemy designs.
