Review in 3 Minutes – The Escapist

As a freelancer reviewer for The Escapist; I have written, edited and produced short form videos for the site’s YouTube channel using the following process:

  • Thoroughly play a game prior to release, writing notes about my thoughts and feelings as I progress.
  • Write a concise script to convey my analysis of the game.
  • Produce a high-quality voice-over.
  • Create and edit the final video using personally captured footage and effects.

Below are an extensive, but not exhaustive, selection of my 3 Minute Reviews with most recent reviews at the top to show my development as an editor.

Interviews – Freelance

As a freelance writer, I have had the opportunity to discuss and create content about the work of video game developers and composers using the following process:

  • Extensively research the topic and create a unique pitch for an article or video.
  • Write questions that reflect the angle of the pitch.
  • Conduct and record the interview using professional conduct.
  • For written articles; transcribe key quotes and craft a story that reflects the interview.
  • For video; editing footage to highlight key points of conversations.

Motion Capture – University of Canberra

As my capstone university project, I created, choreographed, produced, performed and animated a musical theatre piece using the following software and process:

  • Set up Motive Motion Capture studio and recorded the required movements.
  • Edited raw motion capture data in Motive and linked various clips together.
  • Booked equipment and organised assistance to film live portion of the video.
  • Used Maya to apply the motion captured animation to a rig, using skin painting tools for a clean application. Added cameras, lighting and other effects to the scene to match my reference footage.
  • Took rendered animation and added to the live recording using After Effects. Added further effects to create cohesive final product.

As part of the project, I documented my challenges and successes via Instagram which can be found here.

Below is a side by side comparison of a sequence from recording to animation.

Side by side comparison of the original performance, edited data in Motive and the animated final product.

Designer/Producer – Academy of Interactive Entertainment

Humorous Overkill is a first-person shooter that I designed and produced in collaboration with a team of artists, programmers and a fellow designer as part of my studies at the Academy of Interactive Entertainment.

Our team’s brief contained only one thing – we had to create a first-person shooter. The rest was up to us. I pitched the idea of doing something unexpected and making everything a pink, cupcake-filled childhood fantasy game and as a team, we brainstormed to create the final concept.

Working with Marcus, our other designer, we created the first iteration of our game design document (which can be found here) and drafted up level designs in a way that naturally integrated mechanics as they were introduced.

As producer, I created a Trello board to track team tasks and monitor progress to ensure we met our 13 week deadline. We also established a group Discord to further flesh out ideas and refine mechanics. I made sure there was positive communication between team members and helped resolve conflicts to ensure we continued to work as a team to achieve our goals.

I created the narrative, as well as wrote and performed the voice-overs which were used in the final game.

Our game was far from perfect; but our post-mortem gave us further insight into what areas would have helped us succeed such as increased user testing and earlier concept work on enemy designs.
